Why feed your dog a raw diet?
Dogs were in existence long before the creation of kibble. So how could they have possibly survived? In the wild, a dog will catch it's food and devour nearly all of it...the flesh (good source of protein), fat (a good source of energy), bone (good source of calcium), muscle and organ meats, and the stomach with its contents (a good source of enzymes, minerals and pre-digested plant material consisting of herbs and grasses).
Whether you wish to admit it or not, dogs, both domesticated and wild, are members of the carnivore family. Anatomically, they are built for it. No one describes this more eloquently than Juliette de Bairacli Levy in her book, The Complete Herbal Book for the Dog A Handbook of Natural Care and Rearing:
"...the dog is a meat eater, from the teeth fashioned for tearing and crushing, the powerful jawbones and muscles, the small, very muscular stomach, the short intestines (to avoid putrefaction of flesh foods), and above all, the very powerful digestive juices peculiar to the carnivorous animals - digestive juices that can dissolve even lumps of bone. In health, the dog's juices, both of mouth and stomach, are strongly antiseptic, and thus "high" meat and even flesh from diseased animals - food which would kill a human being in a day - can be eaten without harmful effects."
Ms. Levy's philosophy of raising dogs is called Natural Rearing and it means just what it says - raising the canine in such a way as to reproduce the way they would exist in their natural state.
Natural rearing diets, such as NR (Natural Rearing) or BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, also known as, Bones And Raw Food), are based on fresh foods such as raw meats, raw bones, raw vegetables and herbs. Because dogs in the wild would not eat every day, one day of fasting (only for adult dogs) per week is also recommended. This allows the animal to cleanse it's body of toxins.
Cooking breaks down many of the proteins and amino acids in raw meat, thus destroying much of it's nutritional value. The canine being not only a hunter, but a scavenger as well, will be able to exist on a diet of cooked food, but it will not be in optimal health. I guess a similar comparison would be to place a human being on a strict diet of only MacDonalds hamburgers and fries for the rest of his/her life!
Raising your dog on poor diets will eventually have its effect - disease, immune deficiencies, short life span, high vet bills, the list is endless. Thanks to the works of Juliette de Bairacli Levy, Dr. Ian Billinghurst, Wendy Volhard and Dr. Kerry Brown, Dr. Tom Lonsdale and Kymythy Schultz a step in the right direction (back to nature) has been taken. Their books have been and invaluable source of information for all dog owners.
Jesse Dallas writes that processed foods and drugs have seriously depleted the natural vitality and immune systems of many pets. Dogs and cats are anatomically very different to humans. Their intestinal tract, for example is only about half as long as a human's, and food is therefore processed and assimilated very differently. Whereas large amounts of red meat can cause cancer in humans, a lack of raw red meat in an animal's diet can lead to serious health problems.
Animals, like humans, require the enzymes, amino acids and other nutrients in the raw meat in order to stay healthy. Many skin and coat problems are a direct result of a lack of raw animal fat in the diet - fat which humans often believe is bad for their pet. Animals need at least 30% raw fat, and their systems are not designed to handle cooked meat or cooked fat. In the wild, a wolf does not barbecue, grill or smoke its prey. It definitely does not walk to the local supermarket to buy dry food either. Yet most pet owners recoil at the thought of feeding raw meat to their dog, concerned about bacteria or parasites. However, dogs don't get salmonella poisoning because their digestive system is so acidic (or at least it should be) that it kills everything. This is why a dog can bury a bone and dig it up two weeks later and eat the rotting meat.
Dr. Donald Ogden D.V.M. writes that processed pet food (even the best known and most expensive brands) have had their nutrients altered, adulterated, devitalized and destroyed by heat, processing, coloring, preservatives and other chemicals. Feeding your animal such food on a regular basis causes waste-toxins to accumulate in the blood, lymphs and tissue which contributes to a weak immune system and renders our pet susceptible to chronic diseases.
Dr. Kollath, of the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, headed a study done on animals. When young animals were fed cooked and processed foods they initially appeared to be healthy. However, as the animals reached adulthood, they began to age more quickly than normal and also developed chronic degenerative disease symptoms. A control group of animals raised on raw foods aged less quickly and were free of degenerative disease. In nature, we see another example of wild animals eating entirely enzyme rich raw foods being free of the degenerative diseases that afflict humans.
If you spend a little time observing the physical condition of animals in the wild, you will find that so-called degenerative or old age diseases are relatively unknown to them. Except for the danger from natural predators, wild animals generally live quite long and healthy lives. Now, what happens when we domesticate animals and make them into house pets? Are you aware that they quickly develop the same diseases as their human "owners"? We must be making the same mistake with them that we're making with ourselves. Some years ago, Dr. Francis Pottenger tried an experiment on several hundred cats. He divided them into two groups and fed one group their natural diet of raw meat and the other group a man-made diet of cooked pet food. He carried on this experiment through three generations. The cats that were fed their normal uncooked diet thrived. The cats that were fed a cooked diet developed the same diseases, and required the same medical treatment, as we humans.
What are the benefits of feeding raw?
Healthy pets! This is the diet that nature has intended for them. Raw meaty bones should be included in any raw diet. It stimulates gums, eliminating the need for expensive and painful dental cleaning at the vets. Bad teeth are the cause of many health problems. More than 85% of animals have periodontal disease caused by plaque. A raw diet provides a range of benefits that processed dog diets can never hope to even closely match.
- No "doggy odor"
- Naturally cleans teeth - no need for toothbrushes, de-scaling jobs, or gum disease - as where dry kibble will sit on teeth and cause plaque build up
- The time it takes for a dog to chew a raw meaty bone gives their stomach adequate time to get the acids moving
- Less stools produced - and they are firm
- Decreased or non-existent vet bills (your dogs are healthier!)
- Mirrors what a dog would be getting in the wild - and certainly even the modern day dog has digestive tract exactly the same as a wolf!
- Their dogs are living longer on a raw diet than what their other dogs previously had survived on commercial dog foods.
- Puppies develop at a more appropriate rate - quick growth spurts are avoided. A GOOD breeder will want to stop fast growth in any pup.
- The ripping and chewing involved in eating raw meaty bones develops the jaw, neck, and shoulder muscles of the dog. processed dog foods will never assist in this important muscle development.
- Better weight and survival figures in puppies.
Why is processeddog food not good for my dog?
There are a range of problems with processed dog foods.
- A dog's food should never be cooked. It should be fed in a raw state like nature intended. Cooking a dog's food ruins most of the nutritional value.
- Dogs should have access to raw meaty bones. These clean their teeth, work and develop their neck and jaw muscles. The chewing action prepares their stomach for the incoming food mass. Chewing bones slows down the eating process considerably, making it more difficult for a dog to over-eat.
- The main ingredient in dog food are different cereals - the main ingredient your dog should be eating is raw meaty bones. It is these very cereals that cause a range of problems such as allergies.
- Processed dog foods are laden with preservatives, colors (dyes), and salt.
- The vast majority of processed dog foods have far too many carbohydrates in them. High levels of carbohydrates are linked to over-eating, diabetes, weight gain, and numerous other problems. Dogs should eat a low carb diet.
- There is no substitute for a raw diet.
- Most disappointing of all is that your vet is most probably recommending a processed diet because of financial inducements and a lack of independent learning.
Why do people still feed processed dog kibble?
Processed dog food companies have got the advertising part down amazingly well. They have entered the market at every point. They sponsor dog shows, they advertise in dog magazines, they get high profile people (including vets) to talk about their product. Their advertising campaigns are slick, and tend to make people feel guilty if they feed any other way. I hate to say it, and myself is included in this, but people are suckers for good advertising.
All I can say is do you research!!! RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!!
What have people reported?
People who have switched their dogs to a raw diet from processed dog foods have found the following:
- Dogs who were low energy and sluggish become completely new dogs once the raw feeding begins
- Allergies disappear once they start with the raw diet
- Arthritis has significantly reduced or disappeared in some dogs switched to raw
- Better weight control
- No more "doggy odor"!
- Dogs are living longer on a raw diet than what their other dogs previously had survived on processed dog foods
- Bitches managed their pregnancies better with higher birth weights in puppies
